A Legal Enigma as Legislator per Excellence

Rt. Hon. Samson Raphael Osagie is a Lawyer and political enigma, having built his life around the tenets of hard-work, dedication and focus. Despite his well-deserved achievements in life, this amicable gentleman still maintains a high degree of level-headedness as a true servant of the people.

Representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency of Edo State, this young man exudes an aura of humility and love for others. Born November 11, 1967, Hon. Osagie caught the vision of liberating others from poverty by first liberating himself through quality education. The journey began at Aguebor Primary School, Egba between 1973 and 1979 before proceeding to Egba Grammar School, Egba in 1980. He crowned this lap to his early education with an excellent West African School Certificate in 1985.

Not done, between 1985 and 1987 Hon. Osagie moved to the famous Edo College, Benin City to acquire his Higher School Certificate (HSC). That feat quickly qualified him to gain entry into the ancient Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife to study law. He graduated in 1992 with Second Class Upper Division LL.B degree and attended the Nigerian Law School, Lagos from 1994 to 1995. He passed his final exams with a second class upper division to confirm his feat at the university. The quest to drink more from the fountain of knowledge again led him to the University of Benin where he obtained a Master of Public Administration( MPA) degree in2001. Later in 2010, he bagged another post-graduate degree, this time a Masters in Law(LL.M) from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. He has also bagged his third Masters (M.SC) degree in International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of Abuja. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. course in Constitutional Law at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

In 1989, Hon. Osagie taught at the Messiah Secondary School, Urhokuosa. This exposure prepared him adequately for the challenges of becoming a legal practitioner. After his graduation from Law School, he became a Pupil State Counsel at the Ministry of Justice, Ogun State from where he moved to join Lateef Adegbite & Co, a firm of legal Principal Partner. His legal and intellectual prowess and professional finesse led the Iyayi Group of Companies, Benin City to appoint him as Legal Adviser to the conglomerate.

By June 3, 1999, Hon. Samson Osagie opted for politics and was subsequently elected a member of the Edo State House of Assembly to represent Uhunmwode Constituency. Because of his savvy and political sagacity, Hon. Osagie held sway in the House and chaired various Committees and sub-Committees between 1999 to 2007. Some of these include House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources; House Committee on Commerce and Industry; Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution; Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the Governor’s veto of two bills and House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He was also a member of the committees on Rules & Business; Budget Preparation; Appropriation & Project Monitoring; Education; Public Account; Art, Culture and Tourism; Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.

His wealth of experience in the State House of Assembly equipped him for the higher job at the House of Representatives from June, 2007 where he has demonstrated unequalled feat in ventilating issues of national importance. He was appointed Deputy Chairman of House Committee on Human Rights; Chairman Sub-Committee on Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and member of committees on petroleum, information and orientation and rules & business. He was also the chairman of Committee on Special Duties. He is also the coordinator of Seven Point Agenda in the House of Representatives. He is currently the Minority Whip as one of the Principal Officers of the House of Representatives.

While in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Samson Osagie sponsored over fifteen bills with some passed into laws, he moved over 40 motions that were passed into resolutions and attended various seminars in Nigeria, Europe and America. For his good leadership and landmark achievements, Hon. Samson Osagie bagged several awards and honours from diverse Organizations. These are Fellowship of the Institute of Corporate Administration, best Legislator of the year award by National Youth Council of Nigeria, distinguished service award by the Senior Staff Association of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, African Democratic Merit Award for Good Leadership, Benin Achievers Award by the Oba of Benin, Legislator of the year, 2008 Award by Benin National Congress (BNC), Edo Legacy International Award 2008 &2009 and many more awards.
